Treeline NYC Featured in Better Homes & Gardens January 2025

The Winter 2025 issue (January 2025) featured our Treeline apartment as a cozy and calming NYC design, and I’m so excited to finally share more photos of this one.
Treeline is a small pre-war apartment on the Upper West Side, right near Central Park. It actually gets its name from the view — you can see the treeline of the park from the windows. For a busy professional with a very high-pressure career, that view became our starting point.
She wanted her apartment to feel like a decompression chamber. Warm, inviting, soothing — a calm counterpoint to Manhattan — but still distinctly New York. Not suburban, not too quiet.
She loves pattern and color, but wanted restraint. Not the full saturated happy we often do in our family homes here in Pittsburgh. More of what BH&G called "cozy and calming with the perfect touch of prep."
My favorite detail — and the one Better Homes & Gardens loved too — is what we did behind the bookshelves.
We tucked a soft blue wallpaper, a pale blue grasscloth, inside the built-ins behind the books. So when you look at the shelves, you get this subtle depth and hint of whimsy. It makes the white apartment feel warmer without painting the walls blue. It’s a little preppy, a little unexpected, and very calming.
Instead of one big color moment, we layered pattern, texture, and vintage charm. A vintage Milo Baughman burl wood credenza paired with Schumacher wallpaper, Perennials performance fabrics that can handle city life and weekend guests, warm brass lighting and some vintage sconces we found along the way.
The rest of the apartment followed that same idea.
Instead of one big color moment, we layered pattern, texture, and vintage charm. We kept the main walls in Benjamin Moore White Dove — it’s our go-to warm white — and brought in soft blues and greens that reference that treeline outside. Lots of warm wood through vintage pieces, soft textures underfoot with Stark rugs, and custom storage everywhere to hide city clutter.
Our client wanted it to feel family-friendly for when family visits from Pittsburgh. So performance fabrics, durable rugs, and lots of places to tuck things away. Warm and inviting, not precious.
The result is exactly what she wanted — a cozy escape that still feels cosmopolitan. A place to come home to after a long day and actually breathe.
