Our Boca Raton project is in Modern Luxury Palm Beach!

The August 2022 issue features Cypress Grove as "A Fresh Take on Indoor-Outdoor Living — Step Inside This Redesigned Boca Raton Seaside Sanctuary."

As they wrote, it's not every day designers start with sketches from the homeowner. But I was happy to oblige.

The husband, who has a background in architecture, first met me when he and his wife attended the 2020 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach, where I had outfitted the primary bath and closet in pleated draperies and bold prints. They fell in love and invited me to breathe new life into their home.

"In every project, there always has to be some kind of inspiration, a discovery of what the clients love. The homeowner is an amazing gardener. She has incredible rose bushes, loves to be outside, and is inspired by florals and greenery," I told Modern Luxury.

His one request was direct: "We love everything you do, but no wallpaper on the ceilings."

This once-beige home hadn't yet found its footing.

I started with greens and blues as the base — a Florida beach house, punched up a bit. The owner wanted pattern, so there are many, but scale was kept under mindful watch. The palette stays medium pastel throughout, in unheavy cotton-linen blends and lightweight cotton-viscose, not heavy velvets.

To make sense of a long hallway, I wrapped the entry in tone-on-tone modern palm print wallcovering by Thibaut with an extra-wide Scandinavian wool rug from Rug & Kilim. That chunky texture makes it durable while creating an experience upon entry. It backs a mirrored Four Hands sideboard — anything-but-neutral.

Color gets kicked up in the living room with the botanical mural.

"I always saw something impactful there. That mural has all greens, blues and creams, but also introduced orange and yellow and provided that fun pop like a bracelet on your wrist when you're wearing all black or white," I said. "You could pick up a cushion from anywhere and move it to another room and it would still go."

The goal was to fully embrace indoor-outdoor living where the owners could come in and out of the pool with their dog and not worry.

"The Missoni rug underneath the dining table is suitable for outdoors," I said. "But its subtle texture pulls everything together without screaming 'I'm a stripe!'"

We also updated a heavy dark ledgestone wall in the primary bedroom with crisp-white paneling contrasting a bed wrapped in lilac.

With J.A.O. Architects & Planners and Beach to Bay Custom Builders, the first level was renovated to better integrate indoor and outdoor spaces.
