Our Maine project is in New England Home!

The March/April 2024 issue featured Fern Point — our new build on the Blue Hill Peninsula overlooking Blue Hill Bay — as a modern coastal retreat.

And I love how they described it, because it’s exactly what we were going for: a bright, calming retreat where layered textures add depth without clutter. No navy blue and anchors, no ropes and seashells. Just calm, sophisticated, and deeply connected to the Maine landscape.

Fern Point is in Blue Hill, just down the peninsula from Acadia National Park. Our clients split time between Pittsburgh and Maine, and they wanted a coastal home that didn’t scream "coastal." They wanted something that felt like Maine — spruce forests, rocky beaches, salt ponds, foggy mornings and bright afternoons.

Unlike our 1903 historic renovations in Pittsburgh where we’re preserving intricate moldings, Fern Point is a new build. We got to start with clean architectural lines from scratch.

We designed floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels that frame Blue Hill Bay like artwork. When you’re in the living room, the boundary between inside and out disappears — especially with the deck and outdoor kitchen right there.

For the palette, as New England Home noted, we embraced a soft, monochromatic approach. Think warm whites, soft grays, driftwood tones, and natural linen. Not stark white, but layered whites that reflect the light here. We used Benjamin Moore White Dove and Revere Pewter throughout, so the view gets to be the color.

Coastal can get cluttered fast. For Fern Point, we kept it to layered textures without clutter — bouclé chairs, reclaimed wood beams, hand-thrown ceramics, natural jute rugs from Stark, and a woven grasscloth wallpaper that adds texture but can still be wiped down. It adds depth, but stays calm.

And because this family loves to host gatherings that span generations, we designed two favorite spots:

A beautiful outdoor kitchen for summer lobsters — with Calacatta marble counters and covered deck — and an impressive wine room designed for effortless hosting. Temperature-controlled, custom white oak storage for their collection, and a little tasting area that opens right to the living room. Sophisticated and welcoming at the same time.

The whole home is meant to be a perfect setting for relaxed family gatherings. Bright, calming, and so connected to that incredible bay view.
