Pulpit Rock Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh Quarterly Summer 2023

Our Pulpit Rock project is in Pittsburgh Quarterly!

The Summer 2023 issue features Pulpit Rock — a century-old Pittsburgh home with extraordinary bones that needed a modern, fun, highly functional interior for a busy family with multiple pets and vibrant personalities.

Pittsburgh Quarterly is Western Pennsylvania's commerce and culture magazine — more than 30 stories every quarter on the best of Pittsburgh. It was such an honor to be included.

The clients wanted bold, colorful, and truly one-of-a-kind — not beige and safe. The design closely reflects the homeowners personalities.

Unlike our soft monochromatic Fern Point in Maine or serene lavender Pembroke, Pulpit Rock called for bold.

1. Bold paint. We used fuchsia, turquoise, citron, and deep blues throughout — the same palette Library Journal highlighted in our book Design Happy.

Each room has a distinct color personality.

2. Custom wallpapers. Wallpaper is the art here. We sourced hand-painted murals and bold graphic papers from House of Hackney and Schumacher — durable enough for pets and kids. In the powder room and family room, wallpaper does all the work.

3. Tailored lighting. We used custom fixtures details. Layered lighting that goes from bright for homework to moody for entertaining, tailored to each room.

4. Highly functional for pets + kids. This is a busy family with multiple pets, so we used Perennials performance fabrics, Stark indoor-outdoor rugs that can handle everything, washable wallpapers, and durable finishes. One-of-a-kind but livable — that's Design Happy.

Pittsburgh Quarterly also shared a bit of my background — as a child, I had the best playroom: the carriage house my mother Kay Wiegand used as the office for her interior design firm. It was packed with color, wallpaper, fabrics and furniture. That childhood in Edgeworth, with a studio over the garage, is exactly what projects like Pulpit Rock are about.

Thank you to Pittsburgh Quarterly for featuring Pulpit Rock in Summer 2023. This home is also Chapter Pulpit Rock in our book Design Happy: Colorful Homes for the Modern Family (Gibbs Smith, 2023).
