Our Kips Bay room is in Flower Magazine!
For Kips Bay Palm Beach 2020, I did not want a spa-like bathroom. Everyone expects white, calm, spa. I wanted a bathroom that felt like a room you actually want to be in — color, pattern, furniture.
The space was a primary bathroom + walk-in closet. I worked with architect Tom Kirchhoff to open the flow between them so they read as one suite.
In the bathroom, I put an elegant Kohler soaking tub in front of a mosaic tile wall, then wrapped the rest of the walls in a muted Schumacher leopard print. It's quiet enough to let other patterns shine, but it still adds texture everywhere you look.
Then I brought in furniture. A vintage chaise lounge reupholstered in a bold Josef Frank print for Schumacher. Plus window treatments in another bold Schumacher print.
Bathrooms are usually all hard surfaces. A chaise makes it soft. Somewhere to sit, have a conversation, put on shoes. It changes how you use the room.
In the adjoining closet, the color keeps going. Mash-up of bold prints, wallpapered ceiling, all grounded by a muted animal print on the floor — Stark Carpet.
So ceiling has pattern, walls have pattern, floor has pattern, but because the floor is muted animal print, it holds everything down. That's my khaki pants rule — something has to anchor.
This bathroom and closet is where I met the clients for Cyprus Grove Boca Raton. They were at the Kips Bay Show House in Palm Beach, saw this riot of color, and asked me to do their Florida home.
Thank you to Kips Bay Palm Beach for having me in 2020.
